Delivering Assistance with Safety, Dignity, and Accountability in Hpa-An and Myawaddy

Humanitarian assistance is most effective when it goes beyond meeting immediate needs and helps create a safe, informed, and dignified environment for affected communities. Guided by this approach, Braveheart Foundation recently conducted food assistance activities in Hpa-An and Myawaddy Townships, Kayin State, reaching more than 2,600 people affected by displacement and humanitarian challenges.

During the distributions, households received essential food items, including rice, cooking oil, salt, and chickpeas. These supplies were provided to help vulnerable families address immediate food needs and reduce some of the hardships they continue to face.

Recognizing that humanitarian response must also prioritize protection and community safety, Braveheart Foundation integrated Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) into the activities. Community members received information on the risks associated with unexploded ordnance and explosive remnants of war, as well as practical guidance on how to identify potential dangers, avoid unsafe areas, and report suspicious objects through appropriate channels.

Protection remained a key consideration throughout the response. To help ensure that assistance was delivered in a safe and respectful manner, Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) messages were mainstreamed throughout the distribution process. Community members were informed that all humanitarian assistance is provided free of charge and that no individual should ever be asked to exchange money, favors, labor, or any form of sexual activity in return for assistance.

The team also shared information on expected staff behavior, beneficiaries’ rights, and available reporting channels. Through awareness sessions, visible information materials, and direct engagement with community members, Braveheart Foundation worked to strengthen understanding of PSEA principles and encourage safe reporting of concerns or complaints.

In addition, community feedback mechanisms were made accessible during the activities, enabling participants to share feedback, concerns, and suggestions regarding the assistance provided. By listening to community voices and promoting accountability, we strive to ensure that humanitarian action remains responsive to the needs and priorities of affected populations.

Braveheart Foundation remains committed to delivering humanitarian assistance that not only addresses immediate needs but also promotes safety, protection, dignity, and accountability. Through integrated approaches that combine food assistance, risk education, and safeguarding measures, we continue to support communities as they navigate the challenges of displacement and crisis.

Together, we can help build safer, stronger, and more resilient communities.
